Tour Description

As we depart the dock in Haines on a tour van, your expert cultural and naturalist guide will welcome you to the town of Haines and its fascinating geography, culture and natural wonders.

First, you will be treated to a narrated driving tour through historic Fort Seward, one of the first US military bases in Alaska. As we drive up the Haines Highway towards Canada, we pass through the world-famous Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve which boasts the largest gathering of bald eagles in the world.

Passing through the Canadian border we gain elevation and travel above tree-line before arriving at our trailhead. Passports are required for all guests. After covering a safety talk with guests, we’ll head out amidst the tundra landscape. Towering peaks loom above in all directions. There are fantastic views of glaciers, cascading waterfalls, and wide-expanses of alpine tundra.

During the peak of the summer, there are a multitude of wildflowers. Golden eagles, ptarmigan, snowshoe hares, grizzly bears, and other wildlife frequent the area. Your guide will choose from a variety of trails and routes to best fit guest abilities. Typically, the hike will range from 2 to 6 miles in duration and ascend/descend about 500’ of vertical throughout the hike. Along the way, we’ll stop for a picnic lunch with a view. Snacks are provided to keep the energy going for the extended hike. During the early part of the season, we may encounter patches of snow.

After an invigorating hike in the alpine tundra of British Columbia, we’ll return to our vehicle and head back across the U.S. border for the drive back to the dock in Haines.

*Passports required for this tour Equipment/Clothing: Guests should wear layered clothes to dress for a variety of weather including wind, rain and sun. Sturdy/comfortable hiking shoes or boots are essential. We recommend a small backpack for toting water, camera, and extra layers for the day.

Tour Description

*Passports are required for this tour

This tour is a full day adventure into an off-trail, above tree-line alpine area of White Pass. This tour is only recommended for hikers and mountain climbers looking for a challenging adventure in the wilds of Alaska.

Our trip begins with a 40 minute van ride into the mountains and up the White Pass, which borders Alaska and the Yukon Territory in Canada. After we gear up, we’ll leave the road and venture into the alpine wonderland of White Pass. The nature of the tour and route conditions varies depending on the time of the year. In May and June, the conditions on the route are likely covered in snow and will require a combination of snow-shoeing and stream crossing. Later in the season, we’ll still encounter snow up higher on the peaks, but the access route will likely be snow free and involve off-trail hiking through alpine grasses and wildflowers, scrambling on rocks and the occasional stream crossing.

Our route will cover about 6 miles and gain up to 3,000 feet in elevation. Typically, our objective is to climb to the summit of Feather Peak or Mount Cleveland, both of which stand at about 5,500 feet. Both high points offer incredible views of the surrounding jagged peaks and wilderness of White Pass. However, there are a series of high points and routes that your guide may choose from. We may use crampons, ice axes, ropes and other technical equipment to access the summit, however, there are also moderate routes to the summit that can be done without ropes. Safety is always our top priority. The exact route will depend on conditions, group ability, and guide choice. Even if the summit isn’t possible for the day, there are incredible waterfalls, and scenic views to enjoy on this alpine hiking adventure. We allow for a full 8 hours for this adventure, however timing in the mountains can be variable. We’ll be sure to get you back to your cruise ship on time.

Our mountain guides are skilled at instruction and are excited to help teach snowshoe technique and basic mountaineering skills along the way. Weather can be quite variable at the pass. It is possible to have sunshine, whiteout foggy conditions, 30mph winds, rain, and even snow all in the same day. Temperatures are likely 10-20 degrees cooler than at sea level. It is important to dress in layers, and avoid bringing cotton clothes. We operate this trip rain or shine, so good clothing and preparation is essential to thoroughly enjoy the adventurous experience. Waterproof jacket and pants, extra warm layers, and good hiking boots are essential.

*Passports are required for this tour

Hike the first two miles of the scenic Chilkoot Trail, the centerpiece of gold rush history in Skagway. This world famous trail was the main route to the riches of the Klondike during the gold rush. Now a tranquil place of incredible beauty, the trail winds through a lush rainforest alive with birds, animals and wildflowers. We only saw one other small group during our hike. It travels along a remote stretch of coastal forest and offered a great blend of views, forest serenity, and knowledge from our guides. It was a amazing experience, just what we were looking for. We saw a dall porpoise just off of the peninsula, and several Bald Eagles. Tim and Meredith were fantastic guides. The picnic lunch was tasty and we enjoyed eating it on the beach overlooking the Rainbow Glacier.

This hike was very pretty. We were on a gravel trail initially, which then went to dirt and felt a little more adventurous. We hiked out to the peninsula south of town. It was gorgeous. We walked along the rock beach when we got out there and were astounded by the beautiful views. It was so peaceful and serene. Sadly, I don't think we saw any animals. Our tour guides, Abby and Tom, were fantastic. I can't say enough nice things about them. They were knowledgable and friendly and even carried people's backpacks and water. They brought snacks, and the peaceful peninsula was a great place to enjoy them, take pictures, and just relax. It was a great start to our day!

Hayden & Timmy. These men brought the perfect combination of youth and professionalism to the hiking tour. They were very knowledgeable of the land and animals. Our group felt safe throughout the tour and didn’t have any problems. Hayden and Timmy kept us entertained and informed during our adventure. They were the best tour guides we’ve experienced on this cruise by far. We really appreciate all they did for us and we hope to see them again!
