Once in Haines, meet your guide and embark on a tour up the Haines scenic byway and enter the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve. Your guide will entertain you with tales of the culture, natural history, and life in rural Alaska as you make your way to the private property of Chilkat River Adventures. Here you will be outfitted with warm outerwear and board your river boat for your journey through the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve.
You will cruise along miles of tributaries of the stunning glacially carved, braided Chilkat River system. The boat is powered by four stroke outboard jet motors, and is uncovered for the best wildlife, scenery, and photography opportunities. Enjoy narration from your captain along the journey about the many amazing vistas surrounding you.
Moose are often the highlight of the tour along with bald eagles with their massive nests that are dotted along the river banks. If you encounter a moose, bear or any other wildlife, your captain can stop the boat so you can get your Alaska photo of a lifetime!
After your tour, relax at the River Adventures lunch pavilion for a meal including hot dogs cooked on the grill, vegetarian chili, and hot/cold drinks.
As you head back down the Haines Scenic Byway, you will board the ferry and be transported back to Skagway, you will relishing your memories, photos, and your greater appreciation for the Alaskan wilderness and the people who call it their home.
(~45 minutes) -The ferry ride over to Haines explores the wildlife and geography of the steep walled Taiya inlet. A narrator on board leads an informative and enjoyable presentation about the area.
(~45 minutes) - After landing in Haines, we'll take a breathtaking drive by bus up the Haines Scenic Byway, and through the Bald Eagle Preserve to the banks of the Chilkat River where you'll access the jet boats.
(~15 minutes) - When you arrive at the put-in you’ll meet up with your captain and receive a safety orientation before heading out on the river.
(~105 minutes) - You'll spend time on the river exploring the upper reaches of the Chilkat, watching for wildlife, and experiencing Alaska by Jet Boat
(~30 minutes) - Upon arrival at our river take-out you’ll be treated to tasty lunch of hot dogs, chili and refreshments.
(~45 minutes) - A short drive back down the Haines Scenic Byway will bring you back to Haines where we’ll say goodbye to you and hope you’ll join us again on another adventure!
(~45 minutes) -We'll journey back on the fast ferry and return to Skagway.
Our guide will meet you 15 minutes prior to the tour start time to make sure all necessary paperwork is completed. You will meet your guide on the Southeast corner of the main cruise ship dock in Portage Cove. CLICK HERE to see a map pointing to this location.
Who are my guides?
You guides are experts in the industry. They are fun, well-trained and passionate about guiding and sharing their expert knowledge about the history and natural wonder of Haines and Skagway, Alaska with you! Our staff all go through extensive training and hold current first-aid (mostly WFR and WEMT) certification. Many of our guides also lead courses and guided expedition trips for us both in Alaska and throughout the world.
Is there a bathroom?
Yes – restrooms are available on the dock prior to departing for your tour and at the staging area prior to loading the jet boats.
Do you cancel due to weather?
Our tours embrace Southeast Alaska’s unpredictable weather. Our tours run rain or shine. If in a rare instance weather does cause us to cancel the tour you will be refunded in full and provided with assistance with finding an alternative activity for the day.
What wildlife will I see?
Though wildlife can never be guaranteed, Bald Eagles, moose, all five types of Pacific salmon, brown and black bears frequent the area. Wildlife sightings depend on the time of the year, weather and other factors. Your guides will choose the best locations to help you maximize your wildlife viewing opportunity.
What type of motors are on the jet boats?
The boats are powered by four stroke, Yamaha outboard motors. The four stroke motors are much more quiet than the two stroke’s and more eco-friendly and economical to operate. .
Is there a charge for infants (0-18 months)?
No, infants are not allowed. The minimum age to participate in the tour is 7 years old.
